ExpatBriefing: COVID-19: IRS Reminds Expats Of Extended Tax Deadline

By Hans Esser, for Expatbriefing.com 03 June, 2020

On June 2, 2020, the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reminded taxpayers living and working abroad that they have an extra month to file their 2019 federal income tax return and pay any tax due.

The deadline for these taxpayers is normally June 15. However, it has been extended to July 15 as part of the various COVID-19-related tax relief measures announced by the Treasury Department and the IRS in April 2020.

The extension generally applies to all taxpayers who have an income tax filing or payment deadline falling on or after April 1, 2020, and before July 15, 2020.

"This means that anyone, including Americans who live and work abroad, nonresident aliens and foreign entities with a US filing and payment requirement, have until July 15 to file their 2019 federal income tax return and pay any tax due," the IRS said.

Taxpayers needing additional time to file can request an extension of the deadline to October 15.

Members of the military qualify for an additional 180 days to file and pay taxes if certain circumstances apply, including that they serve in a combat zone or serve on deployment outside the United States away from their permanent duty station while participating in a contingency operation.
