ExpatBriefing: IoM Seeing Positive Results From Work Permit Reforms

By by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London 05 March, 2018

The Isle of Man Government says it is seeing positive results from recent changes to the island's work permit system, with the vast majority of work permit applications submitted online being processed within one working day.

In October 2017, Tynwald, the island's parliament, approved seven reforms to the Isle of Man's work permit system to simplify the process. All of the reforms are now operational, with a new IT system and online form submission launched on January 15, 2018.

The Isle of Man Government is reporting that since the changes, approximately 50 percent of all work permit applications have been submitted online, representing a 10-fold increase in online submissions.

The move online and streamlined application process has also improved efficiency. The government says it was processing 31 percent of applications on the same or following day in January 2017. With the introduction of the new system, this has now risen to 86 percent of all fully completed applications submitted by employers.

The reforms are also benefitting cohabiting partners of Isle of Man workers, work permit holders, and exempt persons who are now entitled to automatic one-year permits. The Government says this has resulted in 27 co-habiting partner permits being issued since November 2017.

More information on the reforms can be found on the Isle of Man Government website.
