By Haruna Kobayashi, for ExpatBriefing.com 21 August, 2017

The Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone, the low-tax industrial zone, is taking steps to speed up residence and work permit applications for foreigners.

A designated hospital has established a green channel for foreign professionals to take health exams without waiting in a long queue. The practice has also been introduced to another hospital in Senlan area in Waigaoqiao, Pudong.

In addition, the exit-entry authorities have introduced a 24-hour self-service system in the free trade zone for people to obtain travel permits to Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.

Online service platforms are being used by authorties to notify foreign applicants to pick up their permits, let them schedule an appointment to avoid waiting, and answer their questions about application requirements and procedures.

A phone app is also being developed to help overseas professionals learn about immigration policies and employment procedures in the free trade zone.

The Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone was founded in 2013 and offers a number of tax preferences. It comprises a bonded area, high-tech park, financial area, and an export processing zone.
