British expats in Megaluf who organised protests against a group of Nigerian prostitutes have been arrested on suspicion of hate crimes.
Expats in the favourite Spanish tourism and expat hub of Magaluf had complained to Spanish police about violent attacks and muggings believed to have been carried out by the prostitutes and their handlers, but no action had been taken. Finally, a section of the expat community decided to take matters into their won hands by organising regular protests against the offenders. It’s believe the women are being brought to Magaluf from Nigeria by a sex trafficking ring, with locally held expat businesses suffering a loss of trade due to their activities.
During the first protest, the expat demonstration on the Punta Ballena party street was joined by tourists, some of whom had been targeted by the women. At the time, the Guardia Civil told reporters the demonstration wasn’t against the rules, adding no arrests had been made. However, five British expats have now been arrested on suspicion of having committed hate crimes against the Nigerian prostitutes. One friend of the accused told the press the outcome doesn’t look good, adding his friends have been charged with hate crimes and are now awaiting trial.
It seems the women at whom the protest was aimed have filed official complaints with local police, alleging verbal abuse and physical violence. Before the protest, police had closed a number of clubs acting as cover for brothels, and tourists have complained about attacks by the women’s’ pimps whilst they were returning to their hotels after a night out. One German visitor informed the police after an expensive gold chain was ripped from his neck.
