For those with unlimited cash, this smaller, exclusive Costa Blanca municipality is the place to be.
Spain is mostly rated amongst would-be British expats as a cheap-as-chips hideaway featuring inexpensive accommodation, British food and endless sunshine. For those who can easily afford to be more selective, the jewel in the Costa Blanca crown is the small conurbation of Moraira. This sun-baked little town now has the highest secondhand home property prices in the entire region at around €2,800 per square metre.
For those attracted to the area, their first question usually concerns the reasons why it’s so expensive. Answers are many, including the superb views from the soaring limestone cliffs and coves backing the beaches. The seclusion of the smaller El Portet beach and the beauty of the main Les Plagetes strand are two more reasons, and the small, upscale town itself is free from the package tourism and high-rise vibes of nearby Benidorm. For many, diving into crystal-clear waters without having to navigate a path through hundreds of sunbathing holidaymakers makes it well worth paying more for a property.
For those into yachting, the little town has its own marina, managed by an exclusive club and offering 620 berths, and local fishermen still operate from the quaint port. Better still, ultra-strict town planning laws disallow high rise and overdevelopment as well as protecting its abundance of pine trees, and winemakers can be seen tending to the vines which produce the sweet Muscatel for which the region’s famous.
Lastly, the see-and-be-seen element of Moraira is enhanced by its long list of celebrities who own the exclusive homes and are frequently seen at events and even when they’re out shopping or dining in the upscale restaurants. For those with enough ready cash, this small, perfect example of Spain at its most exclusive is worth every euro they’ve shelled out.
