British expat campaign group Cleaning up Magaluf’s protests against a 50-strong criminal gang have been promised extra policing by Calvia’s mayor.

The violent group of prostitutes and their pimps have terrorised the popular Spanish tourism and expat hub for several months, with protests by affected business owners, British retirees and locals having little effect until now. Packs of West African prostitutes have been accused of ganging up on holidaymakers and robbing them, and it’s believed they’re being run by Mafia pimps and a group of people traffickers. Businesses in the resort area are suffering, and expats are afraid to go out at night.

The Cleaning up Magaluf Facebook page has 5,000 members, many of whom keep tabs on the criminal gangs and post their whereabouts online for tourists trying to avoid dangerous locations. A number of group members have formed their own patrols in a bid to ensure holidaymakers get back to their hotels safely. Earlier this month, local and expat group members lobbied Calvia town hall in an attempt to galvanise the local authority into taking action.

Finally, after another night of violence, the local mayor was forced to take the protests seriously enough to at least listen and discuss the issue with those affected. Over the next few days, representatives of the campaign group are expected to meet with the head of the local Guardia Civil to discuss stronger security measures to protect local people, expatriate business owners and tourists before the summer high season kicks in next month. It’s believed the bulk pf the prostitutes are from Senegal and Nigeria and may be victims of human trafficking.
