Mijas police find massive cannabis plantation in luxury Costa del Sol villa’s basement.
Mijas’s extensive British expat population were amazed when the news of a police raid on a huge indoor cannabis plantation broke. The impressive installation contained more than 500 flourishing cannabis plants, and was discovered in the basement of one of Mijas’s most luxurious villas. Obviously a large-scale marijuana operation, all of the plants were in an advanced growth stage.
Irrigation systems, high-power lamps trained on the bushes, air conditioners and other tools spurring the plants’ growth rates were also found, as were scales for weighing the product, vacuum-packing machines and two cars presumably used for regular deliveries. Further investigations revealed the two occupants of the villa were Italian expats who’d rigged the electricity supply in order to not only pay less but, more importantly, to shield the high usage from prying officials who might well suspect what was going on.
According to a police spokesperson, the highly successful raid was the result of an anonymous tip-off, with the information enough to justify a stake-out during which the two Italians were identified. Further investigation revealed the theft of electricity and gave the police reason enough to organise the raid. Subsequently, the two Italian men were arrested and have been charged with drug trafficking and stealing electricity. No comments from any expat neighbours have as yet been reported!
