According to a Spanish government report, the popular expat destination is now home to more British expats than ever.
In spite of warnings that Brexit would stop new arrivals and be the cause of relocating to the UK for many long-stay expats, there are now a quarter of a million UK citizens living in all corners of the state. Even although a proportion of the four per cent increase may have been caused by long-term resident Brits finally registering with the authorities, the figures are still confirmation that life in Spain is preferable to its equivalent in the UK.
Meanwhile, Storm Gloria continues to lash parts of the country, with the death toll now standing at 13, at least two of whom were drivers caught in raging flood water after their cars broke down. Four more people, including one Briton, are still counted as missing. On Ibiza, the jacket belonging to a missing British man swept into the ocean during the storm has been found, although as yet his body hasn’t been located. Monsoon rains are expected across Andalusia until at least Saturday, with the entire region now on flood alert. River banks are expected to collapse due to the volume of water, and expats as well as locals are being advised to stay indoors until the storm finally moves on.
