Spanish EU MP reassures British expats they’ll always be welcome.

Last Friday, Member of the European Parliament for Spain Esteban Gonzales Pons gave a message of hope to all expat Britons living, working and retiring in the popular country. Referring to Britons who’re fearing for their post-Brexit futures, he referred to the expat community as friends, neighbours and relatives, reassuring all that they will always be Europeans, no matter the end result of Brexit.

The European Union, he said, is your safe house, adding he won’t say goodbye to British expats as, for those who wish to stay, Spain will always be their home. Unfortunately but predictably, the reaction in the UK to his statement wasn’t favourable, with reality TV star and Brexit MP Anne Widdecombe accusing the EU of ‘political myopia’, whatever that is. Given the UK government’s post-referendum total lack of concern for its citizens overseas, the MEP’s words should reassure all British citizens in Spain as to the fact that their chosen lifestyles won’t be ripped from them at the end of this year.

In the meantime, the predicted hit on Spain’s Costa Blanca from a massive storm has already caused one death, with heavy snow falling inland and the coastline punished by gale force winds and eight metre high waves. Schools in the region are closed, and citizens and expats are being warned to stay indoors until the weather clears. Last year saw devastating floods as well as searing heatwaves, with expats as well as locals now convinced global warming is accelerating.
