Costa del Sol expats and tourists sunbathing on a favourite Costa del Sol beach were threatened by cannabis smugglers arriving by speedboat.
Estepona’s beaches on the Costa del Sol are all-time favourites with expats and visitors alike, but one peaceful scene was interrupted last Monday by a gang of cannabis resin smugglers who arrived by speedboat and proceeded to transfer the illegal cargo to a waiting 4x4 in full view of the sunbathers. The smugglers took around three minutes to pile the bags of resin into the vehicle before sprinting back to the speedboat and fleeing the scene.
One of the gang was heard threatening the witnesses with death should they attempt to call the police on their mobiles but, unbeknown to the crooks, witnesses in a house overlooking the sands were filming the entire scene as it developed, with another man claiming the smugglers had been monitoring the coastline from just after midnight. The beach itself is located only a short drive from the popular expat and tourist town of Estepona, with the drop itself the second in the area since early in July. It’s believed the drugs originated in Morocco and were being regularly delivered to Spain via the short sea crossing between the two countries.
According to a spokesperson from Spain’s National Police, an investigation is underway, but no arrests have so far been made. Representatives of the police union are saying bold action by the drug smugglers makes it clear that more resources are needed in order to stop the deliveries and arrest the culprits. In addition, unifying the entire Spanish police force is also needed, as communication is essential in stopping the brazen use of the coastline as a delivery destination. The crooks are well aware the police are acting at a disadvantage, leading them to do more or less as they please in spite of the presence of locals, expats and tourists during the delivery.
