USAA And Its Members Donate Nearly $3 Million To Aid In Recovery From Hurricanes Helene And Milton

Hurricane Response

USAA members have donated nearly $1.4 million; USAA adds $500,000 to initial $1 million and offers guidance on assisting in relief efforts

SAN ANTONIO – USAA and its members have now donated nearly $3 million to assist in the recovery from Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton. USAA made an initial donation of $1 million after Hurricane Helene and has since committed an additional $500,000 to military aid societies to directly support military families impacted by both storms. Through a giving opportunity, USAA members have donated nearly $1.4 million that will go to support efforts led by the American Red Cross, Team Rubicon and World Central Kitchen.

“We’ve seen the true power of the USAA family in the aftermath of Hurricanes Helene and Milton,” said Wayne Peacock, president and CEO at USAA. “We’re grateful to our teammates who are standing tall for members, both with boots on the ground and through phone and digital, and to all our members who are helping to support families in need.”

Just weeks after Hurricane Helene rocked Florida, Georgia and North Carolina, USAA has seen more than 80,000 claims. With many around the country eager to help those who have felt the impacts, USAA recommends:

  • - Volunteering at local food banks or churches. For deeper involvement, Team Rubicon is always looking for volunteers to deploy with them as disasters strike.
  • - Avoiding unsolicited requests through texts, calls, social media and other channels and verify the legitimacy of the organization before donating.
  • - Donating blood. Check with your local blood bank or the American Red Cross for blood donation locations.
  • - If you’re interested in donating money, check Charity Navigator or Guidestar to verify the nonprofit organizations and effectiveness of their programs. Organizations such as Metropolitan Ministries and Feeding Tampa Bay have programs underway to assist.

In 2023, USAA and The USAA Foundation, Inc. committed approximately $46 million in philanthropic contributions. USAA employees extended that impact through their personal giving and volunteering. In total, USAA employees logged more than 267,000 volunteer hours and contributed more than $7 million to nonprofits (a total of $13 million with USAA matching). Most recently, USAA employees raised nearly $600,000 through USAA’s annual Bowlathon event, with donations going to Onward Ops, Overwatch Project and K9 for Warriors as part of Face the Fight®’s efforts to reduce veteran suicide.
