USAA Announces Scholarship For Military Spouses With Valero Alamo Bowl

San Antonio-area military spouses qualify to apply for a $7,500 scholarship.
SAN ANTONIO – USAA, the Official Military Appreciation Partner of the Valero Alamo Bowl, is proud to announce a scholarship opportunity for military spouses stationed in or around San Antonio. This scholarship aims to support military spouses in furthering their education, whether through degree or certification programs, technical training or vocational schools. As part of this initiative, the Valero Alamo Bowl Scholarship Foundation will award a one-time $7,500 scholarship to a deserving military spouse.
“Military spouses sacrifice so much in their support of their service member, and this scholarship is just one small way USAA can thank them for their selfless service,” said Mike Kelly, assistant vice president of Military Affairs at USAA. "The Valero Alamo Bowl really is the number one bowl game outside of the College Football Playoff, and this partnership is a great opportunity for us to show our appreciation to the local military community right here in San Antonio."
The recipient of the inaugural scholarship in 2023 was Maria Garcia, who is married to local Air Force veteran Jupiter Garcia II. Maria is currently pursuing a certification in Elementary Education and Special Education, and she works as a Special Education paraprofessional with elementary special needs students.
“This scholarship means more than words can describe because I have been able to focus on my studies and not stress about being able to afford school,” said Maria. “It has allowed me to confidently take the next step in my career in becoming a teacher in my community while also building a better future for my family.”
The recipient of this year’s scholarship will be notified by December 15, 2024. As part of the recognition, the awardee will be invited to attend the Valero Alamo Bowl Kickoff Luncheon Presented by USAA on December 27, and will also be an honored guest at the Valero Alamo Bowl football game on December 28.
“Every year the Valero Alamo Bowl tries to grow its positive impact on San Antonio, and we’re excited USAA shares our commitment to education,” said Clyde Rucker, Chair of the 2024 Valero Alamo Bowl and Army veteran. “The Bowl is San Antonio’s holiday tradition, and we know the season will be brighter for a deserving recipient of this scholarship thanks to USAA’s generosity.”
Military spouses interested in applying for this scholarship must submit their applications by December 1, 2024. Additional details and the application form are available at https://www.alamobowl.com/milspousescholarship/
